1. Load up your updates with relevant Hashtags

You might already know the effectiveness of popular hashtags in reaching a targeted audience on Twitter.

But, how important are they on the Instagram website?

I would say they are more important than all other social media accounts and platforms. Popular hashtags are the language in which free Instagram followers speak. A power user can be found loading even up to 30 hashtags in their update – the hashtag limit per post.

Note: You won’t need to worry about hashtag fatigue on Instagram. Rather, more popular hashtags equates to more likes on your Instagram photos.

So, how do you find relevant and popular hashtags to add to every Instagram photo?

The process is similar to performing keyword research – Record relevant hashtags that your competitors and brand advocates are using in their updates and use this knowledge to gain followers.

Adding popular hashtags will expand your post’s reach, but make sure that you use only the ones that are relevant to your products and suit your brand personality.

Otherwise, you’ll only see a short-term increase in your engagement, but your new free Instagram followers won’t convert into additional sales.

Moreover, if you integrate less popular hashtags in your posts, then you’ll appear at the top of the search feeds for them. Scout low-competition Instagram hashtags (much like targeting long-tail keywords in your blog posts).

Insellycom uses a variety of Instagram hashtags in their updates, including popular ones (like #fashion), moderately popular ones (like #fashiondaily) and less popular ones (like #fashiontrend).

Simply Measured, in its analysis of 2500 Instagram posts, found that “love hearts” receive the maximum engagement per post. “Sparkles” and “artist palette” are the next two most engaging emojis on the list.

4. Use the right filters and post high-quality content regularly

As per research done at Georgia Tech and Yahoo Labs, filtered photos are 21% more likely to get viewed and 45% more likely to get comments.

So, which filters work the best?

Track Maven found that using “no filter” and “Inkwell” in your photos will drive the most interaction.

While the above filters are good starting points for experimentation, your audience might have a different favorite filter. You need to dig into your own account’s performance, using a tool like Iconosquare.

Once you get your own graphs correlating engagement with filters, you’ll be able to judge your audience preferences.  If you are just starting out with Instagram and don’t have a large following, study your competitors to see what’s working for them.

Note:  Do you know that Instagram also allows users to post up to 15 seconds of video content? But, as per April 2015 research by Locowise, only 10.81% of Instagram posts are in video format.  Yet, they get 17.51% of all comments.

5. Shell out some dollars on Instagram celebrities for getting sponsored placements

There are two strategies for doing this.

Video on Facebook accounts for just 0.9% of all posts. Here’s the crazy thing about that: these same 0.9% of posts account for 7.15% of all reach on the network. And that number is growing.

Video posts are dominating social media, with Facebook emerging as YouTube’s largest contender for video uploads. If you haven’t started marketing with video on Facebook, now’s the time to begin.

We’re seeing huge reach in industries across the board. You don’t need to be a professional videographer to capitalize on this either – all you need is a smart phone, some good lighting, and maybe a few goodies from Amazon. Here’s a step by step guide to shooting pro quality video on your mobile phone.

  1. Set Up Saved Audiences

Saved Audiences can be extremely useful – especially if you want to target a specific market.

Within Facebook’s Business Manager, you can create custom audiences based on set parameters. This enables you to advertise to specific groups of people, making sure that your niche content meets the right demographic.

Facebook added this functionality and every page owner should take advantage.

  1. Upload Your Email List

If you have a large e-mail list, you need to upload it to Facebook. Once it’s finished loading, you’ll be able to advertise to every single e-mail that’s associated with a Facebook account.

Similar to retargeting, this practice is great because it enables you to utilize multiple touch points with your potential customers. Take advantage of their past interest in your brand, and try running a Like or engagement campaign to encourage them to interact with you on social media.

There’s more and more evidence indicating that Facebook is calculating response time into their algorithm, so be sure to respond to messages. Your response time will also be live on your page, so fans will be able to see how quickly you interact with them.

When I gave my Social Media Predictions for 2017, one of the main points of focus was on the adoption of Messenger for business. At Cave, we’re seeing B2C interaction moving towards social messaging in great numbers this year, so be sure to buck the trend and respond as quickly as possible.

  1. Embed Your Facebook Content

If you see a good fit to sneak your Facebook content into a blog post (or anywhere else online), I highly recommend you take advantage of the opportunity.

Mixing together different forms of content is a great way to create more touch points with your potential customers.

Facebook also makes it easy to embed content – just click in the upper right-hand corner of your post, copy, and paste (you can see a real world example of this tip in point nine below)

  1. Shoot Live Video

Video production is going to be a major theme for social media in 2017, and live video, in particular, is going to grow greatly.

Don’t get us wrong – you need to be able to master staged video first, but once you get the hang of it, stepping in front of the camera and shooting live has a ton of advantages.

The most important reason to test out live video is the increased reach. Live videos get a boost in Facebook’s algorithm, giving you a push into more and more people’s feeds.

I say this every year, and 2017 will be no exception.

You need to be social on social media. It’s not a soap box, it was built so that individuals around the world could connect with one another.

If you want to increase your reach, commit to being personal – talk about what your know and your experiences, and have some fun with it. There’s a reason we drink beers at the beginning of every episode of In The Cave – we enjoy it. If we’re having fun, there’s a better chance our viewers will be having fun too.

TEN FACEBOOK RULES OF THUMB FOR EFFECTIVE POSTS

  1. Stay short or make it long. Medium-size posts don’t work.
  2. Publish regularly. Four to seven posts a week will be good, but make sure they have a sufficient quality. An idea could be to fix certain days for certain types of posts, such as “article of the week“ on Friday, or “What I’ve learned about XY” on Sunday and “Did you know?” on Wednesday.
  3. Publish at the best time for your customers: Probably between 18 and 20.
  4. Address all of your target groups but not necessarily at the same time: Sometimes it is beneficial to target posts to a sub-group. That will engage them more. However, make sure to find a mix and not neglect other sub-groups.
  5. Pick a topic that people already talk about. Users interact more to posts that concern something on their agenda. For example if there is something relevant to your group in the news then write a quick comment.
  6. Be relevant: The vast majority of your posts should suit your target groups. Rarely however, you might also chose a different subject to achieve greater interactions (cute cat effect).
  7. Be visual: Pictures, photo albums and videos attract much more interaction than texts. Make sure that these pictures are not too detailed as otherwise users will not understand your message immediately when they see your picture in their newsfeed. For example portrait pictures are easier to grab attention than group pictures and high-contrast graphics work well too.
  8. Interact with your audience: A “like”is good, a comment better and the best are shares. The more interaction a post receives the more people will see it on their news feed. Engaging posts are those with questions, strong statements or for example fill-the-gap-posts such as “No doubt, the winner of today’s debate is __________.”
    If a user comments then engage her or him! Answer the question, or give the comment a like. An honor for fans: share what they have posted on your wall and mention their name. You can also mention other Facebook pages that you’ve like by putting a @ in front of their name (a link will appear).
  9. Tell your fans early on the post what you want: Are they supposed to “like”, to share or to comment? This call should be integrated in the first 90 characters of the post.
  10. Be consistent: Keep to your strategy as good as possible. If you want to try something new think about twice.

How to Find Influencers on Twitter

twitter influencersWho are the key influencers in your industry on Twitter that you need to connect with?

Networking with people who have a large audience, and whose audience pays attention to what they have to say, is very useful for you, when their audience is your potential audience!

But before you go off and build these relationships, you need to put in a bit of work upfront to identify who these influencers are.  Of course, we have some tools that will help!

The idea for this post came from my friend Ramon De Leon

 

1. Twtrland

Twtrland is a powerful tool for analyzing Twitter accounts (and other social networks are now supported).  It divides people into over 40,000 categories so you can really distil down and find the right people in the right categories.

You start off by searching for influencers based on category, and then you specify the country (this is optional).

You are then presented with a list of search results.  You can see on the right-hand side that they are rated by amplification, reach and relevance. You can sort the results based on these ratings.

Here’s what you can do with this list:

a) You see there are some additional filters on the left-hand side.  The filtering is really powerful: for example, I could say that I’m only interested in entrepreneurs who are involved in social media and live in Nova Scotia in Canada.

b) Add these to a list – You can create your own private list so you keep track of these influencers once you’ve found the right people.  You can even export this list to an excel file.

c) View a a full profile of each member on the list, including stats on their activity/engagement and details of their top posts.

Twtrland has a very extensive database with some great filtering options.  Well worth exploring.

 

2. Little Bird

I recently tested out Little Bird and was impressed by the results it achieved.  It identifies influencers by seeing how many other influencers are connected with them.

It makes sense that, if you’re influential, other people who are influential will follow and engage with you.  Littlebird works out a score called an ‘Insider score’ and displays people based on this.

The higher the insider score within your category, the more influential you are considered to be in that category.

Other features of Little Bird:

  • Popular content – When you identify an influencer list, you can see the most popular content they share.  This is probably going to be great content for you to share out also.
  • Discover people to connect to – You’ll find out, based on your influencer list, who you are not following that you should be.  So it’s a good way of identifying new, relevant people to connect with.
  • Blogs – You can browse through the latest blog posts by the influencers.
  • Country filters – You can filter your influencers by country if there’s a specific country you want to target.
  • Export reports – You can export the reports you produce (this depends on your subscription level).

3. FollowerWonk

FollowerWonk is owned by the guys at Moz who have a range of tools available for social media and SEO.  One way of finding a group of people is by creating a filter.  Within the filter you can set the topic, location, follower count, following count etc.

Other features of Followerwonk:

Compare users –  You can compare up to 3 users to find out who their common followers are.  This is a great way of finding relevant people to follow.  Pick out 3 of your influencers and find the people followed by all 3 of them.

Analyze followers – Analyze the followers of any particular Twitter account. Find out their gender, location, follower count, social authority etc.

Track followers – Show changes in followers over the last 60 days for any particular account.

Sort followers –  Sort your followers by social authority, how old the account is, the number of followers and people they are following, or the number of tweets.

4.  Twitonomy

Twitonomy provides very detailed profile information on Twitter followers.  If you find an influencer and want a very detailed profile analysis, this is a very useful tool.

One really useful way of finding influencers is to identify the people who a key influencer talks to on a regular basis.  The following shows an example of who a user is retweeting the most and who they are replying to the most.

When someone becomes influential, they cannot possibly reply or interact with everyone.  Imagine following 100,000 people and trying to keep up!

So what they typically do is create a filtered list with people that they do want to make sure to interact with.  Because of this, these are the people they tend to interact with the most.  They share their content, reply to their tweets and thank them for sharing their content.

So, finding out who they are talking to regularly is a good source of influencers.  These may be high-profile influencers, but it may also be people who are not yet that high profile, but are being watched by the influencers!  These are the up-and-coming influencers and/or people who have access to the influencers, so it’s worth connecting with them yourself, too.

5. SocialBro

SocialBro provides very good filters based on searches you perform on Twitter.  You can search profiles based on the keywords in people’s bio and location, and then sort this list based on a variety of categories.

The influence filter is based on an influence-scoring mechanism called ‘Kred’, where people are rated out of 1,000.  This is not a perfect rating system (neither are similar systems like Klout, Peer Index etc.) but this, together with other filters applied, can help find some great people worth connecting with.

For example, you could show people who have a Kred score of above 800, who appear in over 1,000 lists, and who have 5 times more followers than the number they are following.

Summary

Influence marketing is all about identifying who has influence within your industry or niche and marketing directly to them.

Think about it like this: there are influencers within most niches or industries on the web and they have an existing audience, so the ultimate aim of using these tools is that you will be able to tap into that audience and use it to market your products or services.

The tools help find influencers.  They are not the 100% solution but they are a good starting point.

Think about how you can be more strategic with the people you connect with on Twitter.  Have you spent time figuring out who the influencers are within your industry?
